Shawl of black bobbin lace with an eight-pointed rosette in the centre and a border with gridded octagons and S-scrolls

Shawl of black bobbin lace: Chantilly lace. Square shape. In the center a rosette with eight pointed oval 'petals' fills the tulle ground sown with knots. The circumference of each 'petal' is formed by a leaf garland, which ends in a bouquet at the point. The circular rosette heart consists of eight rosette flowers, one flower at the beginning of each 'petal'. From each flower two zigzag lines radiate, which together form a checkered leaf vein. A very wide and richly decorated border features large bouquets directed inwards from the corners and the middle of the sides, placed between the leaves of the central rosette. These bouquets stand on gridded octagons, which are clamped between colossal s-scrolls. Under the s-scrolls a ribbon, doubled on the outside with a garland of large roses. These form the scalloped edge along the outside of the shawl, together with smaller arch-shaped bands intersected by a palmette. The motifs are made in net stitch and are provided with contour threads.
