Japanese strip with bouquet of roses in an oval and in a bell-shaped cartouche

Strip of natural-coloured needle lace: Brussels mesh lace. The repeating and partially symmetrical pattern consists alternately of an oval cartouche and a bell-shaped cartouche, both with a bouquet in the center. The oval cartouche consists at the bottom of three C-scrolls, filled with circles in which densely scalloped relief circles form rosettes. These circles also appear in a border below the bell-shaped cartouche. In the bell-shaped cartouche stands one rose between leaves and twigs with berries. In the oval cartouche stands an asymmetrical bouquet with two roses and fuchsias. The motifs are built up from festoon stitches and are provided with relief contours of widely scalloped thread bundles. The roses and some leaves are double-layered or triple-layered. The motifs are connected to each other by a mesh lace ground scattered with dots. The top side of the strip is finished straight with a bobbin or machine-made band.
