Batiste handkerchief with embroidery and bobbin lace with the initials CB

Handkerchief with a batiste center piece with embroidery and a border of bobbin lace: Mechelen lace. The lace has a repeating pattern on a lattice ground, with a continuous branch along the top (inside) to which alternately a pomegranate and a triple flower branch hangs. The motifs are made in linen stitch, the contours around the motifs are made with a thicker thread. The motifs, the pomegranate and half oval cartouches along the bottom edge, are filled with a simple diamond-shaped decorative ground. Along the bottom (the outer edge) runs a flat scalloped edge. The lace is set smoothly to the handkerchief, with the exception of the corners which are gathered. The embroidery pattern has four double straight borders with meander corners and middle parts. Between the inner two lines run leaf scrolls, between the outer two runs a spiral, on the corners crowned by a volute ornament. Against the outer border runs a closed palmette edge. In one of the corners stand the initials CB.
