Insert of bobbin lace with a large oval peony between slanting leaves with a smaller peony, attached between the remnant of a linen cloth

Insertion of natural-colored Dutch bobbin lace. The repeating and symmetrical pattern consists of a width-filling oval peony between diagonal leaves with a smaller peony on each. The motifs are worked in linen stitch with openwork edges which also create the drawing in the flowers and leaves. The motifs are connected by a five-hole ground. The top and bottom of the strip are finished straight. The short sides are sewn together to a point by folding and securing the corners. The strip of lace is set between a strip of linen whose short sides are sewn together: the remains of a pillowcase. The lace was probably made in the Southern Netherlands, the pillowcase probably in the Northern Netherlands.
