In the foreground, to the left of the naked Child lying on a cloth in a manger with straw, kneel Mary, who holds the cloth with both hands, an angel diagonally beside her, and a shepherd to the right. Behind them stand a shepherd, another shepherd, and St. Joseph, separated from the third shepherd by the knobs of an ox and a donkey, the latter eating from a manger. Joseph holds a candle; the standing shepherds carry staffs; a standing and a kneeling shepherd possess a wallet. The right one removes his hat. The scene is topped by a cloud bank with two naked, facing cherubs holding a motto band together, flanked on both sides by averted cherubs. The bottom runs into a diagonally placed cartouche bearing the monogram HVH.
