About this work
The cast round pestle widens towards the top and has a high overhanging profiled rim and a profiled foot. On the rim in Latin capitals the inscription IAN VANDEN GHEIN ME FECIT MCCCCCLIII with one punctuation mark in the form of a four-petaled rosette. Around the middle of the wall a frieze with a ram's head between two masks and a vase held up by two griffins (repeated three and a half times).
