About this work
The stabbed body of Dido lying on a wood pile in front of an Amsterdam canal house. Iris, a winged female figure, cuts a lock of her hair with which her soul is freed. On the pyre a portrait of 'Wigmana'. On the left, Cupid shoots fire from a test tube. In the foreground on the left, a fainting woman is brought in. The representation possibly relates to the play 'Didoos Doot' by Andries Pels (1668). At the bottom of the margin, two six-line verses in Dutch and French.
