About this work

Plate from the VOC ship 'Witte Leeuw' with a flat rim, decorated in underglaze blue, 90% present; parts of the wall are missing. The sherd is glassy white and contains much embedded dirt. The base is glazed. The footring is faceted. More than 20 grains of kiln sand were found. The rim is scalloped. In the center, a bird in a water landscape, surrounded by a flowering plant and a stylized cloud motif. The scene is encircled by a star-shaped band with geometric motifs. On the wall and rim, alternating wide and narrow fields filled with symbols of luck and flowering plants.
