About this work
Three women with African features pose outdoors by the road for the artist. Two women stand in the foreground; a third sits further back to the left on the ground. All three wear a folded hip-cloth (lungi) reaching the calves, knotted at the waist. Their upper bodies with hanging breasts are uncovered. Their heads are covered with knotted headscarves. The central woman carries a basket. In the drawing of the seated woman, an arm, breasts, and a leg were likely added later with black chalk. Sheet 18 from a sketchbook of 117 sheets.
