People assembled at a draw-well

From a high viewpoint, a water well is drawn, situated on an elevation (hill) on the left side of the sheet. The rectangular superstructure consists of masonry blocks of stone (claystone?). On two sides stand tall square stone pillars, connected by an iron bar, intended to hoist water buckets with the help of rope and pulley. In the front left, a man sits on the edge of the well. His hip-cloth (veshti, lungi) is pulled up above the knees and tied; his left arm rests on a wooden tub with two iron hoops and two handles. Between the tub and his left leg lies a thick bamboo stick on the well's edge. Diagonally behind him, on the right on the superstructure, a woman leans forward, probably drawing up a bucket. She wears a calf-length wrap-skirt (selai or sari) with the end wrapped around her waist: this leaves her upper body bare; her hair is combed back into a bun (condé).
