Two men with bamboo poles

On the left stands a man dressed in a hip cloth (veshti, lungi) pulled up above the knees; his upper body is bare. On his right shoulder, he holds a bamboo pole. His hair is short and appears curly. Origin probably South India. On the sloping ground to the right sits a man with widely spread bare legs and knees drawn up. He wears wide short trousers (kalisama) and a loose long-sleeved shirt (kamisaya); the right sleeve is torn. On his left knee lies a thick bamboo pole, one end resting on the ground and the other extending off the paper to the upper right. On his thick bundle of tied hair, he wears a tall straw hat (toppiya) with a wide brim. This mix of European and South Indian clothing suggests that this man is a Toepaas, probably from Jaffna.
