Two labourers

Outside on uneven ground, two men stand. The man on the left wears a frayed hip-cloth (veshti, lungi) to the knee; around his shoulders, a shawl (chadar) hangs down the back. The upper body and arms are uncovered. With his left hand, he holds two things at once: a long stick with a small hoe (udalla) lying over his left shoulder, and an object that may be a reed pipe, a Southeast Asian musical instrument. It consists of a round gourd in which a reed, with a short piece of bamboo to blow into and a long bamboo flute with – here not visible – finger holes to play, is placed. In his right hand, he holds a stick that rests on the ground in front of his foot, probably a large hoe (udalla). The man on the right is dressed in a hip-cloth (veshti, lungi) to the knee; around his shoulders, back, and arms hangs a shawl (chadar).
