Two Sinhalese soldiers

Two men stand outdoors on uneven ground. The man on the left is drawn from the right side. His upper body is bare. He wears a knee-length hip-cloth (veshti, lungi) wrapped in the Ceylonese manner. Of the half-length sword (kastane) worn on his left hip, only the ornate hilt with a lion's head and the curled end of the scabbard are visible. He wears a round, brimless cap. The man on the right is drawn from the front. He wears a short, buttoned jacket with long sleeves and a pleated lower hem (hettaya), beneath which a knee-length hip-cloth (veshti, lungi) wrapped in the Ceylonese manner, and a high folded waistband around the waist. In his right hand he holds something resembling a small bag, and a long staff leaning against his right shoulder is probably a lance or spear. Under his left arm the ornate hilt of a short sword (kastane) protrudes. On his head a typical cap (or helmet?): tall, stiff, with a point at the front.
