Two Sinhalese soldiers

Outdoors, two men pose frontally for the draftsman. Their feet and lower legs are bare. The man on the left sits on a rock block. He wears a hip cloth (veshti, lungi) rolled up to the knees with a waistband, an open short jacket with long sleeves and a pleated lower edge (hettaya), and a simple high cap on his head above his ears. The man on the right has long curly hair to the shoulders, parted in the middle, and a short beard. He also wears a knee-length hip cloth, a wide waistband, and a short buttoned jacket with long sleeves and a pleated lower edge (hettaya). On his left hip the decorated hilt of a short sword (kastane) is visible. Under his left armpit a rolled-up cloth is tucked. The object in his left hand is probably a cap. Both men are Sinhalese mercenaries (lascars), now in the service of the Dutch. They belong to the Goviiya caste. Sheet 3 from a sketchbook with 117 sheets.
