Sinhalese soldier and a labourer

Outside, two men stand on uneven ground. The man on the left is dressed in a hip-cloth reaching the knee (veshti, lungi), wrapped in the Sinhalese manner, with a wide tight waistband, double-folded to hold something. Above this, a Portuguese short jacket with wide sleeves (hettaya), high-closed with buttons and finished at the bottom with a narrow pleated band. Under his curved left arm, he holds a rolled cloth. He is a lowland Sinhalese (goviya caste) and likely a mercenary (lascarin) who possibly acted as a messenger. The man on the right wears a knee-length hip-cloth (veshti, lungi). A second cloth (chadar) is draped over his left shoulder and hangs down his back. His torso and arms are bare. A cloth is wrapped around his head.
