Two men smoking a pipe

Outside on sloping terrain, two men smoking pipes are visible. The man on the left stands, the man on the right sits crouching. Both wear a hip-cloth (veshti, lungi) reaching over the knees, wrapped and pinned at the waist. The upper body is uncovered. Both men have their hair combed back and pinned in a bun, and a full beard and mustache. The standing figure holds the bowl of a long-stemmed Delft pipe to which he is pulling with his mouth. A small cloud of smoke curls up above his fingers. The crouching man also pulls on a Delft pipe, holding its bowl with his left hand. Possibly the artist had the same man pose twice. Given the hairstyle and facial hair, they are probably Ceylonese men. Sheet 48 from a sketchbook with 117 sheets.
