Three Market Women and a Passer-by

Outside in a market stall along the street, three market women have displayed their wares. They sit with crossed legs on the ground under the projecting roof of woven palm leaves (cadjan), supported by wooden poles. The back wall and side walls are made of woven screens (warichchi), filled and plastered with clay (mati), according to the traditional building method. Two women sit on the raised step of the stall; the woman on the left sits in front of the step on the street. All three women wear a long wrap skirt (redda), a blouse with long sleeves (hatte), and a shoulder cloth. Their hair is pulled tightly back into a bun (condé), which is clearly visible on the middle woman.
