Two women

Two women outdoors by the road. The woman on the left sits on an overturned basket; the woman on the right stands. The sitting woman – probably Tamil and from Jaffna – wears a long wrapped wrap cloth (selai or sari), the pleats fastened at the waist and the end draped over the right shoulder to the front covering the upper body. Her long hair is parted in the middle and pinned back in a bun (condé). The standing Eurasian woman on the right wears a wrap skirt (redda), combined with a Portuguese blouse with a V-neck and long sleeves (hatte). Loose curls are visible on either side of her cheeks from her hair parted in the middle; it does not appear to be tied up. Leaf 39 from a sketchbook with 117 leaves.
