About this work

Indoors, a woman sits on a wooden bench. She is dressed in a foot-long skirt – or wrap skirt (redda) – of patterned fabric, and a wide Portuguese blouse with a V-neck and long sleeves (hatte). Her wavy hair is parted in the middle and likely pinned back into a bun (condé). The bench she sits on is a narrow wooden plank less than a meter wide on four obliquely placed round wooden legs. On the left of the sheet stands an unfinished sketch of a sitting man. He wears a cap and has a beard. Sheet 78 from a sketchbook of 117 sheets.
