A man and a woman

On the left stands a man outdoors. He wears a hip cloth (veshti, lungi) folded double above the knees with the hem fastened at the waist, and a long open vest without sleeves, made of striped fabric. On his head a damaged ('ramponed') felt hat with a twisted piece of textile as a hatband. He is probably a Toepa from Jaffna, brought to Colombo and employed there, or a former enslaved man of the first or second generation. The standing woman on the right wears a Sinhalese wrap skirt (redda) and a Portuguese blouse with a V-neck and long sleeves (hatte). Her hair is pinned up in a bun (condé). She is Sinhalese or Eurasian. Leaf 33 from a sketchbook with 117 leaves.
