She is dressed in a wide Portuguese blouse with long sleeves (hatte) and a wrap skirt (redda) pulled up above her knees. Her long hair is twisted into a bun (condé) and pinned. A child sits on the ground by her foot. The woman on the right is drawn from her left side. She sits on the ground with legs extended, feet crossed. She wears a long wrap-cloth (selai or sari). Its end lies loose on her lap, leaving her upper body uncovered. Her dark hair appears short-cropped. She is likely the child's nurse; judging by her clothing, she is not Ceylonese but Tamil.
