Two labourers

On the left on a rock along an uneven terrain, a man sits. A high-tucked hip-cloth (veshti, lungi) leaves his legs bare, as does his torso. On the right at his waist, an object sticks up, possibly a handle of a knife. The standing man on the right is dressed in a long shirt (kamisaya) of striped fabric – sleeveless – reaching to mid-thigh. On his bald head, he wears a worn hat (toppiya) with a hat cord. Both men were likely employed in Colombo for reconstruction: the man on the left from South India, the man on the right a Toepaas from Jaffna. Leaf 68 from a sketchbook with 117 leaves.
