Two women, sitting on their baskets

Two women sit outside by the side of the road. The woman on the left sits with crossed legs on an overturned basket; the woman on the right sits atop a full basket. Both women wear a long wrap-skirt (redda) in Sinhalese style and a wide Portuguese blouse with a V-neck and long sleeves (hatte). On their heads is a cloth upon which a thick carrying ring rests. They are clearly resting, both with a hand supporting their chin. In the foreground lies a heap of earth. They may be Eurasian or low-caste Sinhalese women doing earthwork for the restoration of Colombo. Sheet 85 from a sketchbook with 117 sheets.
