Two women; one standing, one squatting

Two women outside by the roadside. The woman on the left holds a twig or straw in her right hand: perhaps a toothpick (dath katuwa). Both women are dressed in a long Sinhalese wrap skirt (redda) and a wide Portuguese blouse with long sleeves. Their heads are thickly wrapped in a headscarf, the ends of which hang forward over the shoulder of the crouching woman. They are likely Eurasian or Sinhalese road workers of low caste, taking a break from their work. Sheet 89 from a sketchbook with 117 sheets.
