About this work

Blue-covered box with the insignia of the Grand Cross of the Order of Leopold, Kingdom of Belgium, awarded to Prime Minister W. Drees. The insignia consist of the badge with sash and star. The badge is a white-enamelled Maltese cross hanging from a royal crown, with oak and laurel leaves between the arms and between the points of the lower arm a pennant draped on two sticks. The central medallion shows a climbing, crowned lion to the left (the lion of Belgium) on a black ground and the motto 'L'Union fait la Force' in golden letters on a red ground; the reverse shows an elaborate mirror monogram with the letters L R (Leopold Rex) in gold on a black ground, surrounded by a golden laurel wreath on a red ground. The badge hangs on a purple sash. The silver star has eight diamond-set points, with the central medallion with lion and motto, identical to the obverse of the badge, here still surrounded by a diamond-set golden border.
