Dipping Needle Compass

Inclination compass in a gimbal ring in a wooden box. The compass box is weighted with a lead weight at the bottom. The rose has a hole in the center, over which a brass bridge runs with the suspension point for the needle; the hole in the rose allows space for the needle, which is attached to the bridge with an axle, to tilt vertically independently of the rose. The rose is balanced with thin lead at the bottom.
