About this work

Photo album with 24 pages containing a total of 96 cartes-de-visite in passe-partouts. Each page contains four rectangular passe-partouts framed with gold lines. Underneath the majority of the passe-partouts, the name and birth and death year of the sitter are written by hand. Depicted are members of the royal houses of Europe from the 19th century, such as King William III, Maria of Orange-Nassau, and Queen Sophia, as well as German and Dutch writers, theologians, scientists, and politicians, such as Victor Hugo, Otto Eduard von Bismarck, and Abraham Lincoln. The photographs were made by various photographers, including Maurits Verveer, L. Haase und Comp., Disdéri, Ludwig Angerer, and Charles Reutlinger.
