About this work
On the left, the patriarch Dan, the fifth son of Jacob. He holds the staff of judges in his hand. In the background a horse being bitten by a snake, references to Dan as upholder of justice and as a 'serpent on the road'. On the right, the patriarch Gad, the seventh son of Jacob. He stands on a shield, and on the ground lies armor. Each image has a Latin inscription, and the sheet contains the seventh and eighth print from a series on the twelve patriarchs of Israel.
