Islamic galley slaves and sailors at the barber
From the collection of Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Free to download, adapt and use — no permission needed.
About this work
A Muslim galley slave sits with a barber, who is also a galley slave. Other Muslim galley slaves watch. These enslaved men are identifiable as Muslims by the characteristic hairstyle (shaved head except for a tuft) they were required to wear. To the right, two sailors sit on a bench, in conversation with a papasso (moollah and representative of the enslaved Muslims).
