About this work

The Roman Ascension, 1621. Satirical print in which a chariot formed by the seven-headed beast carries the Pope, the King of Spain and the Emperor to hell. Lucifer spreads a large net over the whole group. The carriage also carries a group of people trying to escape to Rome: monks, Jesuits, Tyranny, Hatred and Envy, the Duke of Saxony and the bishops of Trier, Cologne and Mainz. Below the plate a dialogue between Kees, Jaap and Mieuis standing in front of a bookseller's shop, in 3 columns with legend A-X.
