About this work

A sperm whale stranded at Egmond aan Zee on 15 February 1764. Many onlookers stand around the body of the beached animal; a man has climbed onto the whale to measure its length with a rope. At the top a small depiction of the sperm whale seen from the back. Situation as recorded on 19 February by the artist. Counterproof of the second state with a mirror-image image and texts.
