About this work

A sperm whale stranded at Egmond aan Zee on 15 February 1764. Many onlookers stand around the body of the beached animal on the beach; a man has climbed onto the animal to measure its length with a cord. At the top, a small depiction of the sperm whale seen from the back. Situation as recorded on 19 February by the artist.
