About this work

A courtesan makes a miniature landscape of sand and stones on a large round leaf in front of her on the ground. A second woman stands next to her, with behind her a room screen with an image of a pine tree surrounded by golden clouds. The miniature landscape represents Matsushima, one of the three famous landscapes in Japan. Left, two poems.
