About this work
Allegory on the Peace of Breda, 1667. Centrally, the chained figures of Vulcanus, Mars, Discord, and Envy. In the clouds, the Maid of Holland and the Maid of Great Britain shake hands, blessed by Peace. In the clouds, other maidens and gods as well. Top left, three cherubs with a scroll with an inscription in Latin. Bottom right, the swearing-in of the peace treaty by the envoys, with bonfires on the left. People from different parts of the the world bring gifts. In the background, the city of Breda. On the sheet below the plate is an explanation of the representation in verse form in four columns.
