About this work
A woman with a broken heart and a shepherd's staff, the personification of Humility, sits on a carriage drawn by two horses. The carriage is driven by Fear (Metus); Peace (Pax) sits as a young girl on the carriage next to Humility. Next to the carriage walk Faith, Hope and Love (Fides, Spes, Caritas). Print from a series of nine prints with triumphal carriages from the Antwerp Circumcision procession of 1561. The personifications on the carriages together depict the cycle of human action.
