About this work
A woman with a broken heart and a shepherd's staff, the personification of Humility, sits on a chariot drawn by two horses. The chariot is driven by Fear (Metus); Peace (Pax) sits as a young girl on the chariot next to Humility. Next to the chariot walk Faith, Hope, and Love (Fides, Spes, Caritas). Print from a series of nine prints with triumphal chariots from the Antwerp Circumcision procession of 1561. The personifications on the chariots together depict the cycle of human action.
