God assigns different tasks to the three estates

God, seated on a cloud with cherubim, gives a command to the kneeling pope, emperor, and farmer. The pope, as head of the clergy, must pray for the salvation of every individual (Tu precare). The emperor, together with the rest of the ruling class, must uphold the rule of law (Tu iustitiam exercere). The farmer represents the largest part of the population, the third estate. He must work to feed the rest of the population and create prosperity (Tu labora). The print has a Latin inscription and is part of a series on the different tasks of the three estates.
