About this work
The Israelites associate with Moabite women and worship their god, the Baal of Peor. The Israelites kneel before the idol and participate in sacrificial rites in the background. Moses had ordered all worshippers of Baal to be killed. In the foreground, Phinehas obeys this order by killing the Israelite Zimri and the Midianite woman Cozbi, who are lying in a tent making love. Below the image, a reference in Latin to the biblical text in Numbers 25. This print is part of an album.
