About this work

The Israelites consort with Moabite women and worship their god, the Baal of Peor. The Israelites kneel before the idol and, in the background, participate in sacrificial rites. Moses had ordered all worshippers of Baal to be put to death. In the foreground, Phinehas obeys this order by killing the Israelite Zimri and the Midianite woman Cozbi, who are lying in a tent making love. Below the image a reference in Latin to the Biblical text in Num. 25:3. This print is part of an album.
