About this work

The city maiden of Haarlem sits under the coat of arms of Haarlem with a staff with a banner in her hands. On the banner is written: Salus Publica, public welfare. She rests her hand on a pedestal with the words: Deo et Patriae. In front of the throne, putti with papers and books, a compass and ruler, and a globe. Allegorical representation in which the city of Haarlem is presented as a promoter of science and the arts.
