About this work

This courtier is dressed according to the prescribed rules of the 1633 edict. He wears a simple smooth collar while standing with one foot on his fashionable (forbidden) lace collar. In the margin, a French inscription clearly indicates that the man feels uncomfortable in this clothing but obeys the King of France.
