About this work
The crowned maid of Amsterdam sits on a throne, surrounded by allegorical figures. To her right stands a female figure holding an All-Seeing Eye on a staff; behind the throne sits Prudence with a mirror and a snake. To the left in the foreground is History, holding a quill and a book. In the background, the town hall on the Dam and statues of two river gods, the Amstel and the IJ, are visible.
