About this work

St. John of Matha, founder of the Order of the Trinitarians. He wears the habit of this order (white robe with blue cross). In his hands a book. Around his head is a halo. At his feet to the left lie several other books. To his right sits a chained prisoner or enslaved man who looks hopefully at him.
