About this work

Saint John of Matha, founder of the Order of the Trinitarians. He wears the habit of this order (white robe with a blue cross). In his hands a book. Around his head is a halo. At his feet to the left lie several other books. To his right sits a chained prisoner or enslaved man looking hopefully at him.
