About this work

Sheet with four oval scenes, each with inscription and date in Latin: top left the Sea battle at Lepanto, top right Saint Simeon with the Christ Child on his arm, bottom left Saint Pelagia of Antioch kneeling before the clothing and jewelry she has laid aside, bottom right Saint Reparata of Caesarea being tortured with molten lead and Saint Benedicta of Laon being whipped. This print is part of a series of prints depicting the saints and the Christian feast days of the year. Four scenes from one plate are printed on each sheet. Including the corresponding title page and frontispiece, the series comprises 124 plates (490 depictions). The three plates with the last 12 scenes (the moveable Christian feast days) were cut down in the third state to 12 small prints and issued with a separate title page.
