About this work
This print shows the steps in the journey of the philosophical soul to God, according to the teaching of the saint Bonaventura. Bonaventura kneels together with Elector Frederick of Saxony and two groups of men and women in prayer at the bottom of the ladder or stairs which symbolizes this journey of the soul. The ladder is composed of text bands with fragments from the teaching of Bonaventura. At the top of the ladder a medallion is depicted with the Holy Trinity, surrounded by the symbols of the four evangelists. Left and right in heaven the souls purified of all vices adore the Trinity. Below by the ladder stand two demons.
