About this work

Ceres, goddess of agriculture, rides veiled with a torch in her hand on a chariot drawn by dragons. She is searching for her daughter Proserpina who has been abducted by Pluto. In the foreground women sit by a stream in which monstrous creatures swim. Scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses.
