About this work

On a raised platform sits the personification of Trade, amidst spools of yarn. Behind her Justice and Minerva. On the left stands Mercury, the god of trade, who pushes aside a drapery to reveal a shop. In the air flies Fame, on her trumpet a banner with a monogram with initials [of the merchant]. In the foreground sits a river god with the coat of arms of the city of Amsterdam under his arm.
