About this work

Allegory on the capture of the citadel of Antwerp, 1 August 1577. The mourning city-maiden of Antwerp is consoled by Truth (Fiducia), Love (Charitas) and Truth (Veritas). In the clouds God and the angels of Reconciliation (Pacificatio) and Vengeance (Vindicta). In the background on the left the citadel is captured from the German troops, on the right the German armies flee in Antwerp before the ships of the Prince of Orange. At the bottom three cartouches with texts in Latin, Dutch and French.
