About this work

Allegory on the demolition of the citadel of Antwerp, 23 August 1577. The inhabitants of Antwerp work together on the demolition and excavation of the fortress. On the left and right pedestals with allegorical scenes. On the left the personifications of Peace (Pax) and Justice (Justitia) support each other, sitting on a throne before a banner with the coat of arms of Philip II. On the right Truth (Fiducia) takes the heavy burden of the crown with the fortress from the head of the city-maiden of Antwerp, she is supported and fed by Love (Charitas) and Truth (Veritas). At the bottom the coats of arms of the 17 provinces and texts in Latin, Dutch and French.
